Bug Description

gnome-shell should always display the skype 'systray' icon in its notification area at the bottom left of the screen (ie that you have to mouse-over to show). However, it does not always do so. Sometimes killing skype and restarting it fixes the problem.

Vanuch, what do you mean by running skype with a timeout? I started having problems with skype notification icon when I started installing extensions for gnome-shell and updates. Haven't the time to downgrade and check one-by-one to find the root of the problem.

I mean that when i turned PC on skype icon absent. But if i do:
killall skype
Alt+F2 > skype
then icon come back to notification panel
so maybe if i will run skype using something like
#!/bin/sh
slep 60
skype
then will all be fine?

Well, if that works for you, then It can be a temporary script (I'm guessing). But killing skype and restarting doesn't work for me. I've set that skype automatically opens in the 2nd working space, and that's the only way I can get to it. If I close the skype window, it's gone for good. BUT, even with that I cannot edit settings, etc.

I made a script called /usr/bin/skyper:

#!/bin/bash
killall skype > /dev/null
sleep 5
skype&disown

and if I lose the tray icon (it sometimes appears but sometimes doesn't in the lower hidden tray), I run skyper from the command line.

Thanks, Rocko. I used the script and it worked! Furthermore, as my Skype icon is not showing up if I add Skype to startup programs, I've saved your script to a .sh file with +x chroot permissions and added it to Startup applications.

Now I get a Skype icon everytime I boot up. Thanks again! :)

No worries, glad to help!

I think the problem at startup is that if Skype starts too quickly, gnome-shell doesn't see it. That's why I put a delay in the script, so that running it as a startup script is more likely to give you the icon. By the way, I think the convention is to not put .sh on the script if you put it in /usr/bin even if it is a shell or bash script (you don't need .sh to make it work), but that's just a convention.
