Bug 930672 has been marked as a duplicate, so I just wanted to point out that this most recently occurred for me using the i386 20120211 Precise Ubuntu iso after installation, then installing 'gnome-session-fallback', logging out and choosing Classic (No effects) from the login menu.

Anytime I add or remove "applets" to the panel I get this panel crash, but the panel comes back with no action on my part. I was testing because I'd seen recent updates to 'gnome-panel' and the addition of 'indicator-applet' and 'indicator-applet-complete' to the repos.

I have only started to experience this bug today after logging into Gnome Classic. Now I see a crash notification each time i log into Unity.

Came here from duplicate https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/927591 with nearly similar symptoms.
Classic\Classic (No effects) without unity panel.
Upgraded from 11.04 if matters.

Get this crash on both Quantal i386 & Precise i386, due to :

Precise: /usr/share/icons/gnome/icon-theme.cache : unknown file format
Quantal: Could not load face 'file:///usr/share/icons/gnome/icon-theme.cache': Unable to read the font face file
