Bug Description

lightdm: 0.9.7-0ubuntu1

I did an upgrade from natty to oneiric using 'do-release-upgrade -d'. Natty was configured for automatic login and included a custom.conf. After the upgrade I'm brought to a lightdm login screen. The automatic login configuration was not copied into lightdm.

This should be done in the postinst when installing from scratch, i. e. the postinst could set the lightdm configuration based on current gdm custom.conf.

This bug left me unable to login, as lightdm fails and shows only black/blank screen as in bug #868516. I think the importance should be changed to High. As a workaround for Mythbuntu users command:
sudo nano /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
and configure:
autologin-user=<YOUR-USERNAME>
autologin-user-timeout=0
user-session=mythbuntu

Ok, assigning to the Canonical Desktop Team for now, jason, pitti, others do you think that's configuration migration is something we need or a "would be nice to have" for the lts to lts upgrade?

I think it'd be good to transition if we can, and it shouldn't be too hard either?

I found out that lightdm-gtk-greeter works, after I had a second look into lightdm.conf. (comment #2)

It is actually unity-greeter (0.1.1-0ubuntu1) that fails. Instead of showing the greeter, there is blank screen and hard disk indicator led blinks actively. The keyboard is unresponsive for a while: you cannot enter tty1, caps lock indicator led is not turned on, but then after about 10 seconds from pressing the keyboard the HD led is turned off and the keyboard starts to work normally. Probably this is a subject of another bug report.

The greeter can be changed in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf. I simply commented the unity-greeter. Reinstalling nvidia-173 or nvidia-common did not help.

This is also a blocker for the automatic configuration upgrade tests in jenkins, I'll work on this tomorrow.
