Bug Description

[Original Description]

 * After upgrading to Oneiric Ocelot Beta 2, the menu item for 'Pointing devices' (gpointing-device-settings) is missing.

[Impact]

 * This change allows users of Unity to find gpointing-device-settings in Dash results

 * It also allows users of other desktop environments to find the program in their launchers (if they read .desktop files).

 * This change only removes "OnlyShowIn=GNOME;" from the .desktop file.

[Test Case]

 * apt-get install gpointing-device settings

 * Attempt to search for it in the dash

 * It should be found in the dash results.

[Regression Potential]

 * Very low. It is a simple change to the .desktop file of an optional package from universe.

 * Users will never see this change unless they have intentionally installed it. In that case, they'd want to be able to find it in their dash/launcher.

[Other Info]

 * This change is already merged into raring.

$ cat /usr/share/applications/gpointing-device-settings.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Pointing devices
Comment=Set your mouse and touchpad preferences
Exec=gpointing-device-settings
Icon=input-mouse
Terminal=false
Type=Application
StartupNotify=true
Categories=GNOME;GTK;Settings;HardwareSettings;
OnlyShowIn=GNOME;

This also leads the icon to not show up or work properly in the Unity launcher. It comes up with a generic question mark icon.

If you right-click and attempt to lock it to the launcher, it will jump to the top of the list by itself. If you then quit the program and try to run it from the pinned icon, it will fail to launch entirely (though the icon will glow as if it's going to launch).

I tested on quantal, but the result should be the same for precise and raring (identical source packages and therefore .desktop files).

In the event that this is in fact not a patch you can resolve this situation by removing the tag 'patch' from the bug report and editing the attachment so that it is not flagged as a patch. Hi Mark,

Thanks for the patch, but perhaps the real answer might be to use NotShowIn=KDE or drop the field completely? I bring this up as bug #796171 mentions that this could be useful in Xubuntu as well and it doesn't show there. I imagine that might also be true for Lubuntu as well.

Also, you can close this bug automatically in the changelog entry with (LP: #857983).

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for your review and feedback. I took another look and found this Debian bug [1] which was filed on behalf of someone wanting gpointing to appear on LXDE. It was closed wontfix because:

"This is quite intentional, because it uses GNOME infrastructure to
restore settings on new login, what does not work in other desktop
environments."

What do you think?

On the other hand, if it's not installed by default in other DEs, what harm is there in the icon appearing?

I'm ok with either patch going through as they both solve the case I'm looking at. I can see an argument for either one wrt to other DEs.

Since the source package is identical, I'm not sure if I need to post multiple debdiffs, but what the heck.

Hi,

As this is an SRU you need to change a few things:
 - Add the rationale, testcase and regression potential sections to the bug description
 - You can't upload the same version of the package to both precise and quantal.

You can learn more on what to do for both at:
 - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates
 - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/UpdatePreparation#Update_the_packaging

I unsubscribed sponsors for the time being. Feel free to re-subscribe us once the bug and debdiffs have been updated.

Thanks!

New debdiff for quantal.

I would have made the precise version string "ubuntu1" and quantal "ubuntu2" but since raring is already "ubuntu2" I thought I needed to version precise as "ubuntu1" and quantal as "ubuntu1.1". Hope that's right! Thanks!

@Mark: thanks, do you plan to add the SRU infos as well?

Do you guys really need the fix in quantal? We are trying to limit the efforts spent on nonLTS releases (especially when the release is out for already 5 months, it means most users can deal with the bug or moved on to another version)

@seb128, Thanks!

I understand the hesitation on quantal, but yes, I'd still like to see this change in q as well. Due to the shortened support cycle of raring there are commercial accounts (particularly the one that raised this issue with me) that will want to stay with quantal longer than they would have previously. Hope that's ok!
