Bug Description

When typing in the Gnome-shell search bar, the computer will entirely lock up. Other than moving the mouse gnome appears entirely unresponsive, my only option is to use crtl-alt-f4, and reboot the system. This started after the most recent update to shell, and has deemed unusable on multiple computers running oneiric.

This also affects me. I'm using Gnome 3.2 taken from Ricotz, for Ubuntu 11.04.

Affects me under Ubuntu 11.10. Exactly as the original post, have to hold power button to shutdown. Mouse still moves though. I only have to enter a single character in the search box for it to freeze.

This is similar to bug 864206.

The freeze/crash is because you are using an alternate third-party theme. Please report this to the theme developer who should work with the GNOME Shell developers to resolve this issue. The theme might just need to be updated to be GNOME 3.2-compatible.

I assure you this is not because of the theme. I've tried reverting back to the default theme, and trying other third party themes. In every case, it suffers from this bug almost immediately

If I restart lightdm to load a new session, gnome-shell will use 100% cpu. The problem occurs 100% of the times I try to search in shell mode.

I have now tested to revert to the default theme, and it seems to solve the issue. Any third party theme I have tried shows this fault.

Turns out the theme is actually 3.0 version, although the theme designer says its 3.2.
I tried this fix from askubuntu.com and it fixed the problem

------
In order to use 3.0 themes instead of 3.2 theme, just add theses few lines at the beginning of gnome-shell.css file in the gnome-shell theme folder :

.icon-grid {
    spacing: 36px;
    -shell-grid-item-size: 118px;
}

.contact-grid {
    spacing: 36px;
    -shell-grid-item-size: 272px; /* 2 * -shell-grid-item-size + spacing */
}

.icon-grid .overview-icon {
    icon-size: 96px;
}
