Bug Description

This is Oneric 32 bit Intel fully updated on a Dell Vostro 3400 laptop.

I cannot shutdown/restart from the gear icon on the top right corner if there are multiple users logged in. It simply logs me out and takes me to the lightdm login screen.

I remember that it used to warn that other users are logged in through a dialog box but would allow me to shutdown/restart anyway if I entered my password.

This should either allow shutdown/restart with multiple users logged in or it should explain why shutdown/restart isn't possible.

I am affected by this as well in 12.04 and in 11.10 before that. If this is not a bug then at least a flawed design. The interface is such that intuitively you do not log out, but just point and click to switch to the desired user account. This then leaves you unintentionally with multiple users logged in, and when you (administrator) want to shut down you are in trouble.

I think this bug/flaw has nothing to do with Oneric / 32 bit. I think it effects everybody.

It should be very easy to reproduce by switching to Guest Session, then switch back (without log-out), and then try to shut down.

There should be a solution for this.

This problem still persists in 12.04 and 12.10, at least with Unity (if that matters).
My solution is to shutdown via a terminal session, which works well (as long as sudo is used).

Work-around:
 1. Open a terminal
 2. Type either of the following to shutdown or restart:
......$ sudo shutdown now
......$ sudo shutdown -r now

/alfs

Hello, I have a similar issue with a fresh install of raring (13.04).

When several users are logged in, shutting down from an account is equivalent to logging off.
If at least one user is logged in, shutting down from the log-in screen hangs indefinitely.

Cheers,

I'm on 13.04 and this issue is still present - it should be possible to override this behaviour.
