Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the release candidate kernel versus the daily build. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

is this safe to do? i only have my primary computer and do not want to
lose the installation, or files or a lot of time to putting it back.
this upstream kernel, is it tested and so on? please give more data on
that.

Yes, this is safe to do. If you have issues with the mainline kernel, you can boot back into the original kernel from the GRUB menu. You can then uninstall the mainline kernel following the "Uninstalling Mainline Kernels" instructions at:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds

okay, I can do it just need a little assistance here. I have never
installed a kernel separately and looking over the site got a bit
confused which should I install. There seem to be different versions of
it. can you please point me to the correct one that i should use? thanks.

You can install the debs from:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.1-rc10-oneiric/

You will want the 32bit debs. They can be installed with:

sudo dpkg -i linux-image-3.1.0-0301rc10-generic_3.1.0-0301rc10.201110190851_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.1.0-0301rc10-generic_3.1.0-0301rc10.201110190851_i386.deb

i did it but got a bunch of errors. when i installed the image file

okay, so i have restarted to see how it goes and it was catastrophic,
well almost. it could not handle my NVIDIA card properly. also the
headers were missing dependencies and thus had to be removed.
now i switched back to the original kernel.

Hi,

for me the solution for this problem was easy: I had this with 10.04 and 10.10 before and it turned out to be the settings for the cursor keys from the num keypad as mouse cursor control. Check yourself with ctrl + 4,8,6,2. If that moves your mouse around follow the instructions from here: http://cyberfunda.com/2011/numeric-keypad-not-responding-in-libre-office/

In 10.04 and 10.10 it was the setting under keyboard preferences. With 11.10 it is on a different location.

thanks. it does not move my mouse course. the same problem was with
previous ubuntu version and the one before that too.

Gabor Toth, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please provide all information noted in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKeyboardDetection#In_case_some_keys_of_your_keyboard_don.27t_work_.28as_expected.29 ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Hi,

yes, the bug still exist. I can not do the testings or bug report as I
have a problem with my browser since the latest kerner update and can't
open websites. The numeric keypad still does not work though.

Dear Gabor, I'm Roland from Hungary. The problem is ot with Linux, it's a problem in your device. I have almost the same model (7520, not 7520G) and mine doesn't recognize the numpad either. If I look into my bios it says that this machine is an 5520. This might be the problem on your computer as well. Although Acer hasn't provided us a working BIOS upgrade, I truly believe that our problem is because of the BIOS, which doesn't recognize our numpad properly. Hope I've helped just a little.
