Bug Description

I am running Xubuntu 11.10 and when I scroll the mousewheel over the sound-indicator, it doesn't adjust the volume

I am not the only one in this situation

it seems to only appear on xubuntu (xfce desktop)

Xfce4-indicator-plugin is missing a callback apparently (it was lost between 0.2.1 and 0.3.0). This is a regression from natty.

The following patch should fix it, but I haven't really tested it carefully (nor sent it upstream).

Patch committed upstream, will be part of xfce4-indicator-plugin 0.4.0 that should be released today (then, 0.4.0 will go into precise, and 0.3.1 + this patch to oneiric-updates).

Fixed in precise. The fix for oneiric is waiting for approval, and should be available for wider testing in a few days (you'll be able to test it as described on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed).
