Language pack setup downloads package lists unnecessarily

Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

As I mentioned to Colin on IRC with, it seems that language pack installation unnecessarily refreshes the package lists, when it doesn't need to download anything. For example, when doing an English install, all necessary packages are shipped on the CD, and no downloading is necessary.

Attaching a screenshot.

There seemed to be some question about which module was doing this...attached screenshot shows the phase of installation where this is happening ("installing language packs").

I just did a 6.10 install and noticed that this happenst there, too. Naturally, it isn't such a big deal after release, as the Packages files on the desktop CD will be current, and we do want the user to become aware of updates as soon as possible after installation.

I'm still curious why this happens during langpack setup and not earlier

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Installing Ubuntu 8.10 to VirtualBox I did not see this particular message (I thought I saw the languages / just not the downloading) although I my have missed it being a bit tired ;-). Will do another run tomorrow but at this point unable to confirm the issue still exists in the current release.

Installing (again) Ubuntu 8.10 to VirtualBox (and paying closer attention) I see the following

[Configuring Apt]
scanning cdrom...
scanning the mirrors...
scanning the local repository...
scanning the security repository...

[Installing Language]
check for package to install...

Matt - Under Ubuntu 8.10 the messages seem pretty clear. I'm not sure if the messages you had problems with in the previous release had been dealt with by removing them or clarifying them as per my previous entry. This does not appear to be an issue anymore.

Should you still have concerns, can you update the ticket and re-open it. Thank-you.

As far as I can tell, this was fixed as a side-effect of fixing bug 114296.
