Bug Description

I administer quite a few machines for which I am not the owner and have an account on these systems. When Ubuntu started displaying usernames in the graphical greeter, my username would show up in the list and the owners of these machines said "Why are you in the list of people who can login? This is my computer!" The situation grew worse when my name came alphabetically before theirs, so my account would show up first in the list.

What I started doing is creating a user with uid 999. This would leave me out of the list, but gdm and lightdm would still allow me to choose 'Other' and type in my username. As of 12.04, I am no longer able to do this because of this commit:
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~unity-greeter-team/unity-greeter/trunk/revision/236

I'm told I can use the 'hide-users' option, but then my users have to type in their username, which is a regression for them. The current behavior is a regression for me because I am totally unable to login to X (sure I could startx, but is that a fully functional environment?).

I understand that the 'Other' option should not be displayed by default as it can be confusing, however I doubt I am the only person who does this, and it seems that the unity-greeter should grow a 'show-other' option, but have it default to false.

Thanks!
