Don't know what caused it: Was starting Ubuntu Software Centre at the time. In Unity 2D as Unity 3-D currently crashing Compiz

Note that, at least for me, bamfdaemon was restarted by the system. Unity got confused, but it is mostly working (it believes incorrectly that I had a nautilus window open).

The stack trace here is useless, as it shows an assertion failure without the assertion message. The assertion happened somewhere in glib, so we can't guess it. Does someone have a reliable way of reproducing the bamf crash? Then we could start bamf in a terminal and see what it says.

I was doing several things to see what did and did not display. Launch icons were the most noticeably absent items. Changing to an ATI graphics card fixed the issue for me.

The crash happened when i tried to update the system using the application 2ClickUpdate, although i cannot be sure that this was the cause of the crash. The application link is

The installation is X86 Ubuntu 12.04 alpha2 on VirtualBox 4.1.8 with 1GB dedicated RAM, Virtual Guest Additions installed, Host Machine is Ubuntu 11.10 X86-64 on Intel E5200 processor and Intel Integrated graphics.

This just happened to me on 32bit under VMware Fusion 4.1.1, after updating, rebooting, clearing the user account and then trying to change the hide/reveal behaviour of the unity launcher

I had Firefox open to a static webpage, and was running System Monitor at the time. I went to System Settings, Removable Media, and then when I clicked on, "Never prompt or start programs on media insertion," I received this Problem message. Nothing happened, though - everything still seemed to be running and working like it should be.

Info: I'm running Precise beta 1 32-bit, with updates. I couldn't repeat the problem on the same session.

It happened when I opened LibreOffice from Chromium. (i.e.) I clicked on a doc file when brownsing a web page using Chromium.

Had this twice in a row. Opened and closed LibreOffice Writer, had the crash, apport reported it. I re-opened LibreOffice Writer, closed it, crash, apport. After happening twice, it wouldn't do it any more.
