Bug Description

Ubuntu 12.04 alpha 2
banshee 2.3.4.ds-1ubuntu1

Expected: songs should play fine when moving from song to song.

Actual: Sometimes (and not all the time), when banshee moves to the next song (in Random and Random-Off) the song will not play. The Icon in the toolbar is in "Play" mode and a "Play" Icon shows up in the list next to the song, but the seconds do not move, and no sounds play. After a random amount of time, it *sometimes* just starts playing the song at about the place it would if it hadn't frozen, other times I have to manually double-click the current song to get it to start, or start the next song. Pressing the Play/Pause button does nothing, but double clicking the song will play it. Because these songs *will* play I don't think it is corrupt songs, especially considering the same library worked fine with bashsee in 11.10.

There is no output on the terminal (w/ no switches) when this happens.
My library is mostly mp3, but a smattering of FLAC, ogg, and whatever apple sells mixed in.

I see the same thing: song plays, but when the next song comes up Banshee just stops playing sound.

Files play fine using vlc, so it's not pulseaudio or the kernel driver.

Does the UI also freeze? Please get the output of Banshee found in
~/.config/banshee-1/log when that happens (or if you can, the output of banshee
--debug with the bug produced).

Attached is my log from Banshee. After the last line, and within five minutes, it happened. I will try to get a --debug output later.
The UI is still responsive, though the play/pause toggle doesn't do anything, just switches the icon around. As soon as I double click the song it is trying to play, it plays fine. Also, if I hit "next" manually, the next song plays fine. It doesn't happen immediately, but after a few songs have already played.

Sounds like a GStreamer issue, or something regarding how Banshee is using
GStreamer. Do you have gapless playback enabled in preferences? If you do, could
you disable it and try again?

Attached a debug output of the last three or four songs. The last song ("Outro") never started playing. I am going to repeat this with gapless turned off now.

Totem has the same issue for me. I think "gstreamer issue" is a good bet.

Turning off gapless playback did seem to fix the issue.

But Amarok doesn't use Gstreamer for playback, so it's probably unrelated.

Could you check what file-types they're getting stuck on?

Yesterday it happened only once, and it was on a .ogg file.

Sounds like the issue I had, see this duplicate and the solution (switch gapless playback off)

I seem to be also affected by the bug. I have "gapless" enabled and it seems to happen randomly on tracks that play fine otherwise.

Thank you Brendan_P for pointing out that disabling the "gapless" seems to fix it, but it can hardly be called a "solution" as the bug itself is still there (just not affecting you).

I think the bug is a minor annoyance with low priority as the application runs fine and doesn't lock up. Though it would be nice to see a fix in the future.

I'm not sure how much it helps me posting here. Should I some comment about me being affected by this as well on bugzilla#669929 ?

Agree Floris, the bug should be fixed not worked around. Just wanted to save some folks the pain of trying to get it "working" and hopefully it helps devs pin point where it's all going wrong too.

The workaround of disabling the gapless playback option doesn't work for me, I still get these random stops on song change (Ubuntu 12.04, Banshee 2.4.0 - also tried 2.4.1, which is in proposed at the moment, but same there)

For me it affects mp3 too. To be exact, playing stops at switches between mp3 and mp3.

I can confirm this is still the case in my configuration -- Ubuntu Trusty Tahr (14.04), 64 bit desktop version, and banshee 2.6.2.

It is somewhat ironic that enabling the "gapless playback" option actually CAUSES a gap in playback.

I do not experience playback fully stopping, and in my case it is also not intermittent. Instead, each song begins playing, and then after just the first fraction of a second of music, I hear about a half second of silence, then the playback continues.
