Hi and thanks for reporting this issue.

I attempted to reproduce this by attempting to install the package in Ubuntu Precise, however it installed without encountering any problems. Could you please refresh your package lists and try to install it again?

I am running 32bit which is likely why I am unable to reproduce this. Sorry about that. As this clearly affects multiple people, I'm changing status to confirmed.

I have got mostly the same issue but I wasn't able to install ffmpeg not gstreamer problem.
I solved MY issue this way

TO FIX THIS BUG!!!!

So the order of fixing ffmpeg installation.
1) Add repository sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/vlc
2) Run update and install VLC 2.0 sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install vlc (notice that you might need to run distro upgrade to install all neccessary dependencies for VLC 2.0 version.
3) install ffmpeg sudo apt-get install ffmpeg

After that I was able to install ffmpeg and all neccessary dependencies.

Is there any progress on this bug. It's beta 2 now and still unable to install half of codecs required:

@psypher - From your log in comment #9:

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad:i386

Did you issue this command manually? If you indeed are using 64bit Ubuntu as you stated in comment #4 (you can check by typing uname -srm in a terminal), then you are attempting to apt-get install the wrong architectural build of gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad. Instead of ending in i386 your command should end in something like x86_64 or x86-64.

The application that pops up saying that you need to insdtall certain codecsx to view a file, that tells my I am missing the above mentioned package and tries to install it. I don't know what that program is called, I have tried asking on the IRC's channels but no-one has responded. I cannot get that program to pop-up anymore, if anyone can tell me how to activate it I can get more info

madbiologist (me-again) wrote :

I think the application is called gnome-codec-install.

A workaround in the meantime would be to manually install by opening a command prompt and typing:

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad

and:

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg

This should fetch the correct architectural builds and get playback working.

I have re-installed precise on 2 different PC's and this issue has not re-occured. The codec app did pop up BEFORE I installed ubuntu-restricted-extras. I think I tried to go with what the default options were ticked and again had these above mentioned errors.

But after I installed restricted extras I am now able to play all the files I am trying to play. Not sure if this can be closed though. I want to re-install again and see what that error was.

@ Nikki1993 - From your log in comment #7, your problem seems to have been caused by a PPA that you were using. This is separate to, and before, the PPA you mentioned in comment #8.

@ psypher - Something that I missed originally is that your problem might have been caused by upgrading from Oneiric to Precise before the final version of Precise was released. This is probably why the 2 fresh installs worked. During the development period of an Ubuntu release (before the final version is released) it is always safer to test with a LiveCD or a clean install. There are other reasons for testing the upgrade process before final release, but broken package dependencies are expected at certain times when some packages are updated out of sync with other packages.

@ shnifti - Did you upgrade or make a clean install of Precise? Can you attach the installation log, similar to those provided in this bug's original description and in comment #9?
