Bug Description

There is no reason to have a dep only on the gstreamer backend. Some people may prefer the vlc backend which works just fine with minitube.
Actually atm minitube performs much better with the vlc backend than the gstreamer one, at least in a 12.04 ubuntu install

just to note - repackaged locally to see if any issue, none seen
done as - Depends: ${shlibs:Depends}, ${misc:Depends}, phonon-backend-gstreamer | phonon-backend-vlc, ect. though I'd guess the way amarok does would also be ok (depends on phonon only

This would also allow users a fix for current inability of the gstreamer backend to decode many youtube formats, most noticeably avc1 <email address hidden> or <email address hidden>

There is no current direct bug to above though may be Part of the cause here - Bug 921287

It's a shame that time has slipped by & this wasn't done.
On the outside chance thatit still could be for 12.04 to again mention

Alowing a switch to the vlc backend would allieviate but no completly solve the crash bug
It would 100% solve the current gstreamer decoding bug with some common h264 encodings - I filed bug subsquent to this one. Noting that the decoding issue will still exist even if the crash bug is fixed

decoding issue - Bug 973014

Using the vlc backend I've experienced almost no crashes & decoding is 100%

Would someone be so kind as to document here how to switch to the phonon-gstreamer-vlc backend? Simply installing it does not work.

Seconded, especially until the gstreamer decoding issue (973014) has been resolved, the vlc backend should be available as a fallback option. Obviously, choice is a good thing at any time. Doug, can you share your repack?

You know - there was just, (last week), a failed 12.10 build of minitube which still isn't allowing choice of backends. Really getting tiresome - no reason not to take 15 sec's to edit the control file to allow either

So - how to edit a minitube .deb to allow - ex. uses a .deb from a well known ppa so you can have the 1.7 version in 12.04

I will post a new reply to that thread tonight with instr. on building your own & will attach a source/debian/dsc Then just 3 simple commands & a couple of min. for a better version
(the source will be latest 1.7.1 + a patch for an obscure issue with the vlc backend
