Bug Description

After about 8 hours of use, I closed all the following programs:

Pidgin
Eclipse
Rational Team Concert
AT&T's AGNclient VPN software
Banshee
Chrome
Synaptic
Gnome-Calculator
Gnome-Terminal
Nautilus
Lotus Notes

...and noticed that hud-service is taking up 162M of RAM. It started out taking up something like 24M.

Isn't that memory usage a little high?

New info: When first loading Unity, hud-service takes up only 2M of RAM.

Something is definitely not getting released here.

I often have to reboot every day after leaving my laptop on over night (12.04 up to date). I've seen it go as high as 1.4GB for me. I use Eclipse, Chrome, and Thunderbird along with KVM for virtualization if that helps. As of this minute, my hud-service is at 457mb with an uptime of 21h, as reported by the System Monitor. System is an AMD A8-3500M laptop with 8GB RAM and AMD's fglrx driver with Catalyst 12.02.

My machine has a 16GB big RAM. Now take a look at this:

Lokk at this: hud-service eats more memory than a Virtualbox running Windows 8. See attached.

I see that this bug is marked as fixed in 0.3.96。I'm still seeing it in 0.3.97-0ubuntu1. I have a number of Ubuntu 12.04 LTSP Fat clients, and none of them can last more than a day or two without hud-service using up all of the memory on the machine.

@eddyg-j:
could you describe the workflow on these machines: are there a lot of applications being opened and closed constantly or are some apps running more than others?

@rutsky-vladimir:
could you please file a separate bug against hud package? https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hud/+filebug
13.10 has a new hud package and the memory leak you are seeing most likely unrelated to 12.04 memory leak.

@ryan
could you take a look at this. We have fresh reports from 12.04 users saying that hud1 is eating up their RAM.
Thanks!

this is not a duplicate of #1253593 as the code base in 12.04 is different.
