Bug Description

*Steps to reproduce
1. Install "Desktop" version of Ubuntu (Gnome) Edgy 6.10.
2. Preform after-install updates using the built-in Gnome update notification.
3. Boot into the 2.6.17-11 kernel after the updates update from 2.6.17-10.
4. Audio no longer works.

*Notes
1. I made no advanced changes other than running the initial updates.
2. I'm using a Creative Labs Live 24-bit internal PCI soundcard. Another unused soundcard is onboard, but I do not have the information on it other than it's a SoundMAX brand and my motherboard is an ASUS A7V600.
3. Choosing the old 2.6.17-10 selection in the Grub boot menu results in the sound working like normal.

Now my audio does not work in either 2.6.17-10 or 2.6.17-11. Previously, booting into the -10 would allow me sound, but now neither work. I have not made changes to the system that would be causing this.

I'm going to wipe the harddrive and reinstall Ubuntu to see if this issue is possibly a one time thing.

So I reinstalled Ubuntu. It had working sound during the install but didn't have sound after the install this time (it did before). As I said before, I have two soundcards, one onboard and one in a PCI slot. I use the PCI soundcard and don't have anything plugged in to the onboard one. I decided to go into my BIOS and totally disable the onboard one altogether. After I did this, the sound now always works, as opposed to working off and on.

Okay, I thought that the issue was resolved, but now, my sound "sometimes" works. It could be working, then I'll reboot, and there will be no more sound. Then I can reboot again, and there is sound. I'm not doing anything in between that should be effecting this. I just reboot and it breaks or fixes it each time.

See http://librarian.launchpad.net/7096933/asoundconf , which pinpoints the problem. Essentially, PCI peripheral enumeration is nondeterministic. Sometimes your onboard is able to grab index 0; othertimes your 24-bit "Live".

You can work around this by executing the following in a Terminal:

echo options snd-via82xx index=-2 |sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

and rebooting.

The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached it's end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task. However, can you confirm if this issue still exists in the Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS release? If so, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha2 is also scheduled for release today. It will appear at the following when available: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha2 . It contains the the actively developed 2.6.26 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could test this upcoming release via a LiveCD and verify if the issue still exists. If so, please include the appropriate debugging information as outlined at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems . Thanks in advance.

Dereck, unfortunately (or possibly fortunately), I've since discarded the aforementioned soundcard and replaced it with a higher-end card. I am not currently using Ubuntu on my workstations anymore as my job requires me to use quite a few Windows-only applications; so I won't be able to do any further testing of this particular issue.

I'm sorry to hear that the issue couldn't be resolved in a timely matter for you. I hope your new sound card works for you when you return. :)
