Many thanks for the answer. It was a photographic image I wanted to rotate in 3D in Inkscape and I managed to achieve the desired effect with Object> Transform> Skew. I have just downloaded Inkscape 0.47 the stable version by all accounts. When I open it up with the shortcut I get the following message:-The preferences file C:\Users\ Fiona\AppData\ Roaming\ inkscape\ preferences. xml is not a valid XML document. Inkscape will run with default settings, and new settings will not be saved.

Here is the path I took to get the files to save in a svg file: OS (C:) > Program Files > Inkscape > Templates > Default > Right Click on Default > Open With > More Options > Select Inkscape. Now instead of an IE Thumbnail I have an Inkscape Thumbnail (Inkscape Logo).

Deselect the rectangle then Ctrl+click to select it again together with the .svg image it contains. The go to File - Export Bitmap, select Selection (it seems to do this automatically) then Export, choosing where you want to store it eg Desktop. Go to the chose folder, select the section's image, copy and paste into Image Viewer and Print.

For now, the easiest way to select part of your image consists in using a clip path: 1. Draw a shape on you image with the size and position of the part of the bitmap you want to select. 2. Select the bitmap and the clip path. 3. Use Object>Clip>Set. Please not that the process is non-destructive and that you can release or modify the clip path.

If it is a vector image (svg, some pdfs, ps, eps,...), you will want to remove the old text object and add a new one using the text tool (keyboard: t). To learn how to do this, take a look into the introductory tutorial inside Inkscape (Help -> Tutorials -> Basic). You might need to ungroup the image first (Shift + Ctrl + G).

I don't know about any preexisting palette, but you could add your own. Let me know if you need help with setting that up.

Delete everything inside it (all document tags) and save the file, then open Inkscape and Recent files will be empty. On windows the location of the file is usually C:\Documents and Settings\[your username] \Application Data\Inkscape\ preferences. xml. Did you keep your files in the Inkscape installation directory?
