I have recently upgraded from 7.10 (done using the upgrade button in the update manager) and everything worked without issue until last week when I was prompted to install an update for Thunderbird.

Sounds like a failing drive. I suggest you ensure your backups are good. If you grab the Ultimate Boot CD there is a Western Digital drive tester there (Made by Western Digital themselves) to test their products.

sudo apt-get -f install tells me to run sudo dpkg --configure -a and configure gives me the error. dpkg: unable to access dpkg status area: Read-only file system. when I try to run the adept installer again I get the error configuration file "home/david/.kde/share/config/kdesudorc" not writable.
