Bug Description

I was testing 12.10 kernel on 12.04 (see http://packages.qa.dev.stgraber.org/qatracker/milestones/223/builds/16265/testcases/1301/results) but after having installed the kernel and booted my PC I could not login to my session, I got this error message:
"failed to load session "ubuntu"".

Joseph Salisbury (jsalisbury) wrote : Re: Session failed to laod with 12.10 kernel on 12.04 test

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.5kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the other tags). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since you tested the latest upstream kernel. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug report at bugzilla.kernel.org [1]? That will allow the upstream Developers to examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to the bug.

If you are comfortable with opening a bug upstream, It would be great if you can report back the upstream bug number in this bug report. That will allow us to link this bug to the upstream report.

When I booted my PC in to kernel 3.4 final I could not log on to my session and got the same error message as reported in the bug description, so definitely the bug is present in kernel 3.4.
I noticed one thing, if this could be of any help, when I booted my PC in to kernel 3.4 final, I could not get to terminal pressing CTRL+ALT+F1, normally when you press CTRL+ALT+F1 you get a terminal where you can log on and enter the command line.
I pressed CTRL+ALT+F1 when I was on the logon screen, where you have to enter your password to enter your session.

I tested both v3.4-rc1 and v3.4-rc2 and the bug is on both rc, I could not log on to my session and get the same error message.
I noticed one thing, if it can help, I get some error messages while launching dpkg -i to install the rc1 and rc2 kernels:

This is the console output for rc1:

If of any help this is the output of the dpkg command for installing the kernel, it has no errors unlike the ones that gave me the error:

Unfortunately, There isn't much more we can do on the kernel side because of the proprietary nature of the Nvidia driver. Since we can't look at the code and figure out what's wrong and fix it. It might be best to also open a bug with the Nvidia developers.

So the faulty Nvidia drivers are the current ones.

Colin Watson (cjwatson) wrote : Please test proposed package

Hello Carla, or anyone else affected,

Accepted nvidia-graphics-drivers into precise-proposed. The package will build now and be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/295.40-0ubuntu1.2 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance!

Hello Colin,
I have tested the "Nvidia-current 304.51.really.304.43- amd64" driver on Ubuntu Quantal and up to kernel 3.5.0.19 they did not work, they started working on kernel 3.5.0.21 and 3.5.0.22.
I will now test them on Ubuntu Precise and let you know, I just have to re-install Precise to try them out.

---------------
nvidia-graphics-drivers (295.40-0ubuntu1.2) precise-proposed; urgency=low

  * Add support for kernel 3.4 (LP: #1011828). This will
make sure that the driver can build against Quantal's
    kernel.
  * debian/control{.in}:
    - Add optional dependency on linux-headers-generic-lts-quantal.
