Bug Description

Bugzilla supports a nice feature which lets you reply to a comment.
It's a simple feature, it's just a little bit of javascript to quote the comment you're replying to
and inserting it in the new comment.

This is one of the things I think went wrong with bugzilla.mozilla.org. <http://mpt.net.nz/archive/2004/03/21/unwanted> Several little features (including comment quoting) were added to make it easier to have conversations, but the increased chatter made Bugzilla worse overall for tracking bugs. Possibly this has never been much of an issue for Gnome, but probably it would in Ubuntu, and in other high-profile end-user projects using Launchpad.

I agree that this increases chatter in a media which is not really meant
as a discussion form.
But is launchpad supposed to be a bug tracker for a high-profile
end-user project such as Ubuntu or a generic one which one can use for
any kind of projects?

Not all projects tracked by Malone are going to get input from
end-users, some of them are very technical and specfic where a reply
interface would make sense. Bazaar comes into my mind, there are many
others.

True enough. We could make it configurable per-project, but maintainers probably wouldn't understand why the option existed until it was too late. :-)

As a previous heavy user of Bugzilla, I too really miss this feature when managing bugs in LP.

The more comments attached to a bug, the more painful this is, especially when trying to get someone to clarify a comment further back in the stack.

Also, in addition to the reply feature, I'd also like to see the ability to edit comments as well ( see LP: # 80855 ).

I think we should do this, since it makes it easier to follow a conversation, but it's not a priority at the moment.

Changed in malone:
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Triaged

I also frequently wish that Launchpad included such a feature.

It's possible to quote previous comments using the email interface, so it should be possible in the web UI as well.

hi there

well, i was been fiddling around my own reports and i have found that this *despicable and *by *boundless *ignoracy *stinking - what is it .. is it bug or not sure how to call it - just affects me also very painfully .. don't forget, that this *** has been reported 3 years ago .. probably we'd better append to summary (headline) "since 2007" ..

well, i'm old-skulled UNIX admin and i have nothing to do with ubuntu or launchpad itself, but true is, that i'm tending by some mystic reason (like the most of others) to hatebreed against ubuntu and related things .. i don't know why, it's just a fact and no matter how much i dislike this underpassing tendences which i can't control .. this is good example: the first thing which came in my mind when i face to such a issue on this site is :: "oh bloody hell, these ubuntu folks are #$%^&*" .. i don't like this .. please fix this as soon as possible ..

no need to feel touched, i'm playing it up ;) hence it's probably more funny (hysteric funny) than sad ;)

regards by daniel

ps. once more: i'm playing it up !! don't feel touched (ubuntists can a bit :P)

I'd like to have this feature as well. Infact, launchpad bugs is not so much a bug tracker, but also completely replaced our mailinglist, because all features and bugs have their own 'thread' now - namely the bug report.

Especially with the new opinion status (which I love!), quoting paragraphs of the last persons posts would be sooo helpful. Please reconsider the bug in the light of the latests status additions; it makes it more important imho.
