Bug Description

The volume control icon is showing the muted symbol always. There is no way to unmute it. On right clicking m I can see "mute"/

Also, I am running ubuntu 6.10 inside vmware server. Vmware server is running on windows vista business.
Is there any way you can help.
It says that "The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.

You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking the speaker icon on the panel and selecting "Remove From Panel" from the menu."

Sound is there in windows but not in ubuntu

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Hello Xander,

Its great that you are getting back to me on this issue and this just
adds to the reason why I love Ubuntu. To answer your question, the laptop
which I had before ( on which I had an issue with the sound) is gone and I
am using another laptop. It has a connexant sound card and is Intel core 2
duo as opposed to the previous AMD. Also, I am running Ubuntu 7.10 on a
dedicated partition.

Thanks to the Ubuntu team, the sound works perfectly fine on the newer
version i.e. 7.10 . I still feel there may be an issue related to activating
the "Restricted Drivers" on the computer to enable the various effects. But
this is entirely another problem I believe.

Thanks,
Sandeep

Thank you for your answer. I let this issue on "incomplete", because the bug could be still there. Everyone who have the same issue, please reopen this report as new

Hi Derec,

I am using Ubuntu 8.04 and I get very loud and harsh noise. My config is :
'
HP2500t
2.2GHz Intel Core2 duo
connexant sound
2gb Ram
......

Do you suspect something fishy here? Do you recommend certain steps to
correct this? I upgraded my previous version to 8.04 ( did not install a
freah copy of 8.04).

Thanks,
Sandeep

Ok, progress then! Awesome! :) Could you please describe when you hear the 'very loud and harsh noise' or how you are able to make it happen?

It would be great if you could test this via a LiveCD and verify if the issue is not a configuration problem made when trying to make it work previously. If the problem exists still, please include the appropriate updated debugging information as outlined at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems and set the status of the bug to 'new' and the bug will be reviewed again. Thanks in advance.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
