Bug Description

1st attempt failed at installation of grub. Found on start of 2nd attempt to install Kubuntu that grub target was set for "hd0" on first attempt, which does not exist on this SATA system.

2nd attempt was to change grub target to "sda1". This failed with fatal error as well.

3rd attempt was to change grub target to "sda0". This also failed with fatal error.

The following report was from failed first attempt:

This system is an AMD 64 with a single 500GB SATA hard drive. The system has 4 window partitions and 2 installations of SUSE (10.0 and 10.2) working well. Grub is installed by SUSE from the previous installation of 10.0 and upgraded by 10.2.

I tried installing Ubuntu 5.1 on another older computer having a standard IDE hard dirve with windows and SUSE Linux 10.0 and it updated the Grub well and allowed all three systems to be bootable.

Looking for any possible solutions. Thank you for your help.

My immediate suggestion would be to download the alternate installer CD and then install to a command line. Once you have that, you can apt-get install kubuntu-desktop and have Kubuntu.

GRUB should be installed to (hd0) even on a SATA system.

There is no such thing as (sda0) or (sd0). As for why (hd0) did not work, I'm not sure.

I found a work around as opposed to a fix to 6.10 which is to install the new Ubuntu 7.04. It works fine and installs the grub as it is supposed to on an SATA hard dive. Thank you Ubuntu team for the new 7.04 software!!!!!
