Bug Description

I can only connect to my campus' wireless network by using nm-applet, where I can specify the "Key Type" as TKIP (not Auto or AES-CCMP).

KNetworkManager provides no option to specify the encryption protocol ("Key Type"), so I'm stuck with the following algorithm:

1. Quit KNetworkManager
2. Run nm-applet
3. Enter SSID, key, etc. by hand (nm-applet doesn't use KWallet)
4. Kill nm-applet (nm-applet doesn't have a "Quit" option)
5. Re-start KNetworkManger

So, can we have a drop-down box with choices of key update protocols (e.g. TKIP, AES-CCMP, Dynamic WEP)?

I have same same problem on my system, although it is not mandatory to knetworkmanager.

in addition, my wpa network is wep encrypted, and selecting it from the pulldown menu bring the wep key selection and doesnot allow me to configure WPA options.

I am using KNetworkManager v0.2 with Kubuntu Gutsy. The option to specify TKIP as a WPA option is there. See attached screenshot.
Marking as fixed. Please verify

does it support Dynamic WEP under WPA Enterprise?
if not, then it should.

you have changed the description of the bug, as mentioned.
but the main problem is the absence of any selection in the WPA
enterprise dialog.
IMHO it should be:
KNetworkManager Should support key type selection under WPA Enterprise

(and the dialog should have the options available: TJIP, Dynamic WEP, etc)

I would also like to see the "Dynamic WEP" option when trying to connect to a wireless network with WPA Enterprise.

This bug should be fixed upstream... I haven't been able to test it myself (Gutsy has libnl-1.0-pre5, but I think knetworkmanager needs 1.0-pre6), but revisions 711598 (http://websvn.kde.org/?view=rev&revision=711598) and 711600 (http://websvn.kde.org/?view=rev&revision=711600) look very promising.

hi,

I applied these two patch sets on the debian package source of knetworkmanager and i was able to connect to my university network that use TKIP for Key Type.

Hello,

I've got the same issue trying to connect to my university network. I was wondering if the patches mentioned in the above post could make it into hardy. I'm running Hardy Alpha 5 at the moment, and am yet to see them.

Cheers

Hello again,

Seeing there was no response to my above post, I thought I'd try compiling knetworkmanager from svn. Unfortunately, I haven't had much success. The changelog reveals that the above patches were in fact merged into the codebase quite some time back (around october last year). I'm surprised they haven't made it into Debian or Ubuntu.

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone has successfully compiled knetworkmanager on kubuntu from svn before. I can successfully run ./configure, however, making the package seems to throw a bunch of errors and not actually compile any binaries.

Cheers

Hello,

This seems to be fixed in Hardy. I suggest closing the bug once a couple of people confirm.

Ah right. Is there a box that allows you to select TKIP/CCMP etc at the moment?

There still isn't an option for Dynamic WEP as Legolas mentioned. Hmm, I'll look at the knetworkmanager source at some point and see if they're added it. I think the kubuntu devs just merged the most recent changes from CVS, and they must not have included Dynamic WEP.

Hmm. deja vu...

The option to select TKIP was in Gutsy :)
The option to select TKIP was missing when Hardy was released. :(

The option to select TKIP was put back into Hardy. :)
The option to select TKIP was missing when Intrepid was released. :(

Is this just co-incidence or a pattern?

The option to select TKIP is still missing in Intrepid :(

TKIP is sad about being forgotten after performing so well in Gutsy and being snubbed by not being invited to the launch of Hardy or Intrepid.

TKIP would like to remembered and welcomed back into Intrepid and not miss out on the launch of Jaunty.

This bug Persists in 9.04 (Jaunty). There is no option to set the encryption type in the KDE network manager. This makes it impossible for me to log into the network at my school.

I can confirm that the option to select the encryption type is missing (again) in Kubuntu Jaunty.
Many users of eduroam (http://www.eduroam.org/) need this or they will have to use wpa_supplicant/dhclient on cli.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Kubuntu better. The KDE3 version of KNetworkManager has been discontinued by its original authors. This unfortunately means that there will be no more bugfix releases, and updates in general will be limited to those fixing security flaws.

While we cannot fix your bug, the good news is that the applet has been totally rewritten for KDE4 in the upcoming Kubuntu 9.10 release. There is a good chance that this bug is no longer an issue with the new applet. If you find any similar or new issues with the applet included in Kubuntu 9.10, we would politely ask you to file them as new bugs against the "plasma-widget-networkmanagement" package.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
