Bug Description

Version 7.04; Last updated ~15 April
Brief description: sound stopped working sometime after last update, then after reboot (2 days later), gnome became very dysfunctional. Workspaces were not accessible and windows were not movable. New windows appeared in top left of screen, overlaying gnome menus.

I have no log files as my .xsession-errors was over-written when I was able to recover gnome. A very similar error file to my old one is available at:
  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2470379
This link also has a description of seemingly related problems.

I was only able to recover normal usage by removing all ".g*" directories in ~
(I still have these directories around if any config files w/in them can be useful for debugging)

Sound is still unavailable in Ubuntu, although it works under Windows so is probably not hardware related.

These are my first problems in 7.04 and they only appeared after updating packages over the weekend.

Sound problems were the result sound becoming unexpectedly muted (fixing the hard stuff is quick - it's the easy stuff that takes a while).

Not sure if the sound problem was related to gnome going down or not.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for following up. I've since upgraded to 7.10.

This specific problem hasn't recurred, but I have had intermittent stability problems similar to what was reported (though none as serious) - in the most recent problem, I booted the machine and logged in while the monitor was turned off. After turning on the monitor, I was unable to change the screen resolution. I logged out then logged back in, and my desktop was gone. The window manager froze and I had to do a hard shutdown. Things recovered well after reboot.

As a practical matter, given the frequency of occurrence and the unpredictable nature of similar behaviors (and the bug backlog), I'd suggest changing the bug status to 'non-reproducible' or a similar category for now, or leave it as incomplete, and close it. This doesn't sound easy to trace down...

Closing as "invalid" per your comments. As for your "intermittent stability problems", if you can't find similar bug reports already in LP, please do file them. One bug per symptom is probably the best way to go, with references inside each bug to the others if you believe they are related.
