Please include the following patch in 12.04, 12.10,13.04:

http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.alsa.devel/92315

This patch was committed to :

Andy,
Thanks, in regards to 12.04 what needs to be done to include it?

Do you have a way to reproduce and test for this bug? If so, I will build a Precise test kernel with this commit applied. If you can confirm it fixes the bug, I will submit a SRU request for Precise (12.04).

I created a Precise test kernel with commit 1815b34a applied. It would be great if you can test that kernel and report back if it resolves this bug.

The kernel can be downloaded from:

Joseph,
Some of our team members were able to resolve the sound issue by installing the patch above as well as a number of other patches.

We believe that ALSA 1.0.25 package would solve this problem as it has the patch above and a few others which are also needed. What needs to be done to install ALSA 1.0.25 Ubuntu 12.04 LTS?

@Kim, one solution would be installing a newer kernel (precise has backported 3.5.x quantal kernel in the repo), since ALSA userspace is already version 1.0.25

Since you are using a HDA device, another solution would be using David Henningsson's PPA: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS

This is unrelated to AMD and does not need a bug task assigned to it.

@Kim, we could submit an SRU request to have commit 1815b34a applied to Precise. However, using the backports kernel may be a better approach. Is using the backports kernel an acceptable solution for you?

apt-get install linux-image-generic-lts-quantal should solve this problem on precise.

James,
Per our last meeting we had decided an apt-get update would be the more elegant way to include this. Just wondering how that is coming along.

Hi Kim,

Let's discuss more at the meeting. I don't think this'll be hard to fix, I can do the work today.

This bug is awaiting verification that the kernel in -proposed solves the problem. Please test the kernel and update this bug with the results. If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed' to 'verification-done'.

If verification is not done by one week from today, this fix will be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!

This commit is a 5 line commit that appears to be "obviously" correct. I has had some testing and no regression have yet been reported. Given the simplicity of the commit I'd like to keep it rather than revert it and cause more issues for HP owners. Therefore I am marking this as tested.

The verification of this Stable Release Update has completed successfully and the package has now been released to -updates. Subsequently, the Ubuntu Stable Release Updates Team is being unsubscribed and will not receive messages about this bug report. In the event that you encounter a regression using the package from -updates please report a new bug using ubuntu-bug and tag the bug report regression-update so we can easily find any regresssions.
