Bug Description

Binary package hint: pidgin

I connect to my account of Gmail and Pidgin says to me that I have 1 email without reading, but if I become disconnected and I become
to connect, Pidgin says to me that I have 2 emails without reading.

When I connect with several accounts, Pidgin adds the new email, but when disconnecting, it doesn't reduce them.

I have exactly the same problem here, Gaim incorrectly refreshes the unread mail count, by adding the number of unread mails to the previous number, instead of replacing it.

Note that even when all my mails are read, Gaim still says that there are unread mails. I have to manually remove that notice by clicking on it and close the opening window. Also, in that window, the number of unread mail corresponds to neither the previously displayed value or the really unread mails.

Gaim always tell me I have 6 unread emails in my Yahoo account, when I know I don't have any. Checking my email through Gaim will make the notice go away until the next time I start up Gaim. I did recently start using the new Yahoo Beta mail interface, I don't know if this affects Gaim's Yahoo plugin any...

Since we've moved onto Pidgin long ago, I think this bug can be closed.

I just checked on Hardy (Pidgin 2.4.1) and it is not solved.

I searched Pidgin's Trac but the closest ticket I found was: http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/1462
It is supposed to be fixed since 2.2.1 however…

Another thing to try:
– put 2 unread mails in your box
– wait for Pidgin to update the counter (I do not know if it is possible to force this), it correctly displays 2 unread mails
– read one mail
– wait for Pidgin to update the counter… Hey! It just increased! Now it indicates 3 !
– mark one mail as unread
– wait for Pidgin to update the counter… It reaches 4
– read one mail
– wait for Pidgin to update the counter… It decreases back to 3, strange…

I can confirm this as I'm having a 5 days uptime, with about 80 or more disconects (You now, broken and loose RJ-45 plug...) and from ~125 mails, now I have exactly 10392 new mails...

Also, on the version I had some days before, if I clicked on the message, it popped out the dialog box for choosing the account where i wanted to check the new mail (there are correct numbers inside), If I then clicked "Close", it would crash pidgin (Maybe because the program had a feeling that he was wrong, lol).
In my current version (2.4.3) I think it does the same but randomly, as I don't try anymore just in case... :)

Confirmed. I have had this issue too, but have not seen it for a while, simply because i don't get many emails to that account any more.
Is this bug still in Hardy and/or Intrepid?

I just checked on Intrepid (x86_64 − Pidgin 2.5.2) and it looks like the count is not wrong any more, at least when there are unread mails. When all mails are read, the counter is not reset and keeps its previous value.

("pidginized" the bug report a little=)

Also, i recall i had this problem with an hotmail/msn account as well as an gmail account, so perhaps our issue is not limited to type of account.

The bug on Pidgin's Trac was automatically closed, but it looks like a "won't fix" because the protocol does not provide the required info: the protocol seems to tell the number of new mails since last check (I did not check this)

If that's right, I believe Pidgin should not display new mails like this, it should display them as a simple notification frame during a few seconds.

As for today, on 9.04 64, it is happening... Pidgin will show you the number of messages you have on gmail x the number of times it checked for them.

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance.
