Bug Description

Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

To reproduce: Open Thunderbird in a maximized window. Select an email so that it is showing in the Message Pane in the lower right section of the screen. Right click near the bottom right corner.

Expected result: Thunderbird brings up the right click context menu.

Actual result: The context menu flashes on for a split second, disappears, and the email message is deleted.

Version: Thunderbird 1.5.0.10 in Ubuntu 7.04

If I right click without releasing the button, the context menu appears above the mouse pointer. The option to "Delete Message" is closest to the pointer. Releasing the mouse button deletes the message.

This bug doesn't affect just Thunderbird. Its equivalent in Firefox is bug #34582.

Hmm, I can confirm this, also in firefox also.

I am using the default theme installed with Thunderbird, I presume it is occurring that on mouse up that it when it registered a click.. Strange..

Seems like a GTK issue more than anything.. However I cannot replicate it across the desktop.. So I presume it is not..

Thanks, Alex.

On CentOS 5 box, with Thunderbird 2.0.0.0 (downloaded directly from mozilla.org, not packaged), similar occurs.

Right-click on top (or bottom) right of preview pane (excludes inbox) message is moved to trash, if done in trash, message deleted -- no confirmation dialog.

I can see how this might happen if the context menu position is slightly different in linux, after seeing what happens in windows trunk. Delete is the last item in the context menu, so even an accidental double click in that area of the window might cause deletion. How close is cursor positioned in relation to context menu when you right click, under normal circumstances?

Carsten, can you reproduce?

p.s. I was not able to find a dupe for this.

My cursor is in the same size box in the right bottom corner of the preview pane as you would expect to see the Scroll Bar arrow.
I can still reproduce this myself.
I have updated from "Edgy Edge" to "Feisty Fawn"
Thunderbird version 1.5.0.12 (20070604).

do you see the problem described?

Marc, 1.5 won't be getting patches. We need to know what is happening using v2.

This bug appeared in the Mozilla code I was using. The problem exists for all right click popup menus in Thunderbird and Firefox. After applying the patch from bug 312225, the problem disappeared. The problem does not exist in FF 3.0 release, and Tb 3.0 alpha 1. I guess this is a duplicate of bug 312225 unless it has something to do with bug 404314.

likely dupe of bug 312225, as Sunil suggests.
It didn't land on branch, so if you want to see this fixed in 2.x you'll need to request the patch for 1.8.1.15

I never open an email in a window, i just read them in the lower panel. This is an intermittent bug, in that it doesn't occur all the time. However, once it's started in a particular email, it will carry on happening no matter how often you undelete it. And you don't have to be in the lower part of the email for it to occur.

It drives me nuts. When will it be fixed? Given that this thread started in April 2007 and it's now June 2009?

This is sounding like the right click bug. Maybe when you are right
clicking it is choosing the last entry in context menu?

Yeah, seems like it. I just right clicked to check, as I generally use the button at the top of the screen to delete a message.

It's not the only problem I get with right click. Frequently in firefox rightclick will open up the Window Resizer. That is not the last thing on the right click menu, but the first. It's a lot less annoying as I just continue right clicking till I get the option to copy, paste or whatever, then close all the window resizer windows afterwards, lol
