Sound worked on kernel 2.6.17 (Edgy), but only with builtin speakers. Headphones did not work. Also, I had to unload the snd-hda-intel kernel module when hibernating the system (added to MODULES in /etc/default/acpi-support). Now, with kernel 2.6.20, everything is silent - but the error messages that filled the kernel logs (hda_codec: invalid dep_range_val 0:7fff) seem to be gone. At least something. :-)

I resolved this issue adding certain option to snd-hda-intel module.
With model=6stack-digout everything works. I placed it to /etc/modprobe.d/options file
But still there are many unused volume bars for different audio channels, though only two actually needed: front and surround - they control built-in speakers and phone jack respectively. "Wave" bar controls master volume.
Make sure those two channels (front and surround) are unmuted in alsamixer.

This works - but not after resume from hibernation. And I guess a better place for 'model=6stack-digout' is /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base instead of /etc/modprobe.d/options.

Yes, sometimes un-hibernation causes sound to disapper. But strictly speaking, I have not tested if it is reproduced every time. In some cases, waking up from Suspend-To-RAM state also makes the same effect...

Headphones seem to work after resume, even if speakers are silent. Playing around with alsamixer does not help.

However, the microphone works, which it did not in Edgy. An improvement!

You can try other models instead of '6stack-digout',
I hava a Toshiba Satellite L30-115 and model=toshiba model=uniwill-m31worked to enable sound on it.
I have read that yhose work on L30-134 too

model=toshiba or model=uniwill-m31 are not valid alternatives for Toshiba L30-134. Trying this ends up in auto-probing BIOS:

May 26 13:20:42 localhost kernel: [402654.492000] hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC660VD/ALC861VD, trying auto-probe from BIOS...

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
