Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

After downloading a .pdf file, I went to FILE>OPEN FILE, and selected the downloaded file to open. When I selected the file to Open, it tried to "SAVE AS" and overwrite itself.

Firefox doesn't handle PDF files nativelly, so it will ask to either Save or Open using an external application, unless it is configured to always Save PDF files. To change this configuration enter in: Edit -> Preferences -> Content -> Filetypes -> Manage and remove the PDF form the list.

Thanks, Silvio:

Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be the case. I don't get the Save
or Open Option, only the "Save" Control Window pops up (per
attachement). I checked the "Filetypes -> Manage" section; but the
PDF format is not on the list.

One more thing - when I upgraded to Fiesty, I seem to have lost Adobe
Acroread. I can still open pdf files via the Document Viewer.
Shouldn't Firefox's "Save or Open" option include the option to open
with Document Viewer?

Thanks.

Also

As for the Adobe plugins - I had them in Edgy; but they were not present after the Feisty Upgrade. '

Could not reproduce the problem. User configuration seems correct. Someone with good Firefox knowledge should pickup this report.

Thanks. I just reproduced the problem a few minutes ago. If this
forum is "affiliated" with Firefox' bug forum (or CC:'d as a
courtesy), it'd be great.

Robert

acroread was removed from feisty for a few reasons afaik the main reason is it was no longer being supported. Firefox needs an outside plugin to handle PDF files. please search for a new plugin to handle them in the repos (there are a few) and tell me if this fixes it. firefox needs to save the PDF because it has no way to open it. Please give a fully detailed set of instructions with PDF files you can reproduce this with. What version of firefox are you using? If this happened after upgrade to feisty and the acroread app was causing it to work correctly this is not a firefox issue as you did not replace acroread with a working app. Try it and let me know.

Thanks, John:

I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.3; and downloaded the PDF download Plugin
recently. My system still prompts to "save" the document, even with
the "Open PDF" option (in edgy, acroread would have been raised
display the document at that point).

Can you please test this on 2.0.0.4 as it is the latest firefox in edgy. I will try to reproduce this as soon as i can.

this sounds unreproducible. Lest look for a tester to reproduce this for some more weeks.

Your requests may be connected to Question #7536 I have posted in launchpad.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/7536

I've upgraded to feisty on Update Manager; but most of my repository
sources are still set on edgy.

I've upgraded to 2.0.0.4 - now my PDF Download Tool doesn't pop-up to
give me anymore download/display options (though it's selected).
However, I am getting used to saving documents first.

Thanks,

Robert

the above statment you made is unsupported way of doing things as it causes alot of breakage. Rejecting bug at this time.

If it's unsupported, why does Ubuntu offer it without a warning of
sorts in the first place?

Ubuntu never says nor never has supported mixed repos. The versions you have in edgy are different than feisty and can and will cause problems.

Please clarify.

All i did was click on the "Update" button when the Update Manager
announced that and upgrade for Feisty was available. Nonetheless.
the "Update Manager Team" fixed that bug. All my current pkg repos
are now based on feisty.

As for Firefox's problem - found the solution on the "Preferences"
Section. It's all fixed now.

Thanks,

Robert
