Bug Description

Hi all,
I tried accessing help.ubuntu.com, wiki.ubuntu.com, google search, debian , google but of no avail. While there is ample documentation to tell how to read fsck errors but not what to do when fsck dies. I have a vague idea that one has to put on the live CD, mount the hdds (don't know how) though & then run fsck or one of its brethens. There is also no mention about how fsck, & e2fsck are differemt.
There is also no documentation about how one can collect data or what data is to be collected (i.e. is useful) in case if the filesystem is corrupted. Also no documentation if there are any other rescue tools either in universe or somewhere else which could help. There needs to be either a collection of some wiki pages or a dedicated trouble-shooting guide the alternatives & what it means to use those alternatives.

With regard to the difference between fsck and e2fsck, as far as I know, e2fsck is a filesystem-specific checker, whilst fsck is basically a front-end for the diffent types of checkers available.

If you look in the /sbin directory, you'll see the different variations of fsck that are available.

Specifically, fsck is just a front end - fsck.ext2 is the utility that checks ext2 volumes for example.

I am putting together a page which I agree should be under https://help.ubuntu.com/community/TroubleShootingGuide, however I think it may be worth including a note and a link to this information from within the system documentation too - simply because after an improper shutdown, the new user may wonder what fsck is when they see it running for the first time (again for the, is it, 21st reboot?).

Thanx, I hope you update the bug when the page/s are to your satisfaction and give the link so I and other interested people could see the documentation on the same and see if its ok or needs more clarity. Thank you for taking the initiative :)
