Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

There have been a couple of reports in #edubuntu as well as this forum thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=416615

Reported on ubiquity on the strength of comment #3 in that forum thread.

(please note that I (the bug filer) haven't actually experienced this bug personally. I did encourage one of the #edubuntu reporters to file it but couldn't find it when I later searched.)

I can confirm. I installed the Edubuntu 7.04 Desktop cd as a quick way to set up a standalone workstation with educational software. Imagine my surprise when at the end of the installation, ubiquity removed all of the software that the live-cd had under the education menu!

Agreed. I'm a technology Instructor at a Middle School, and liked what I saw on the CD boot up. After installing Edubuntu to a computer, all the Education software disappeared. VERY time consuming to try to find a fix for this by installing software via internet (our school bandwidth is pathetic at best), or CD with some "work around" that non-tech people would not even attempt.

Several questions:
1) can the Edubundu be patched to load the software from the cd EASILY?
2) can a new Edubuntu ISO be released that does NOT delete the eduction folder from the installation?

This is obviously a mistake that needs to be addressed. I cannot and will not recommend software to my peers and students that require advance troubleshooting skills to repair.

Today while installing Edubuntu again, I was watching the install status bar.
What I saw was:

1) Installer installing the Education suite
2) nearing the 99% complete mark, the installer deletes the eduction suite, item by item.

This is something that needs to be addressed immediately.

Thanks.

Unfortunately it appears this will not be fixed for Feisty. It would involve changes that are too invasive for a stable release. Something will be done for the next release (7.10) for sure. For now what you want is to get the Edubuntu Classroom Server Add-on CD. It has all the educational apps on it. The Desktop CD is mostly for demos of Edubuntu and things like that. It isn't really the recommended way to install Edubuntu at this point. We are working on getting the wording of the download pages adjusted to reflect this. Sorry about this bug. It was a unforeseen side-effect of adding a 2nd CD for Edubuntu.

I see the change made it to http://edubuntu.com/Download, but will it also change on the actual download pages? For instance, the language at http://www.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/ubuntu-releases/edubuntu/feisty/ still encourages use of the Desktop cd.

I was informed that the Server Add-on CD was the way to install the Education software. This is not correct. In fact, I've tried the installing the server software, and then installing the add-on CD, only to have nothing. I burned the iso image for the server add-on cd on a windows computer (like i have with all my edubuntu cd's) and I can see the files for the add-on cd. However, in both the server install and the desktop install, the add-on disk would not allow me to install any software.

I have yet to see any specific instructions for using the add-on disk unless there is some cryptic list of instructions I have not located yet.

The promotion of a eduction version of Ubuntu is being defeated by a desktop version that has the software on the install CD, but refuses to install it, and a server add-on cd that is unreadable by either Edubuntu or Ubuntu.

What is needed at this very moment is a cd image which will allow for the installation of all the education software, simply and easily after inserting the CD. Or a location where I can download all of the programs as I need them, copy to a cd or usb drive and install easily from there.

Again, I will state, I think the Edubuntu project is an excellent idea, but at this time I cannot recommend it to others in the education field until it is so easy to install that it does not require tech support to puzzle through things like, "WHERE are MY education programs!!!" (me being both the instructor and tech support at my school sites).

The Feisty Server Add-on CD should just work. I've done it quite a few times. You pop in the disk and it should ask you if you want to install the software. For more info see the Edubuntu Handbook at http://doc.ubuntu.com/edubuntu/handbook/C/ch02s03.html which is also installed with Edubuntu in the Gnome Help Center.

The normal mode of installation for Edubuntu is the Classroom Server CD, which allows you to do either a standalone workstation install or LTSP server install. With either of these if you put in the Classroom Server Add-on CD you will be able to install all the old educational programs we've had in the past plus some additional software we added for Feisty. Another thing to note is that this is the first time in Ubuntu that we've tried to do a 2nd CD. It caused the Desktop CD issue that is the subject of this bug report. These will be fixed in Gutsy (7.10) and I'm working on making the add-on CD installation more user-friendly. Keep in mind that Edubuntu is developed by one Canonical employee (Oliver) and a handful of volunteers like me. We try our best, but we need people to test stuff like this more before releases for obvious reasons. If we had been aware of the issue and able to fix it before release we certainly would have.

We've documented the Add-on CD in the Edubuntu Handbook, and we've changed the wording on the Download page on edubuntu.org. In the mean time you can certainly suggest using the Desktop CD from Edgy (6.10) or Dapper (6.06) if somebody wants to use a LiveCD. The Classroom Server in Feisty is the recommended installation method and is fine as far as I can tell.

Greetings,

Thank you for the quick response. I will try the server install again.
I appreciate the work that is being done. My point of view is basically of a teacher using the product for the first time. I was hoping to have a test lab up and running with the edubuntu o.s. before the school year was over (6/12). so as to get some feedback from the students on the different applications available. So, forgive me if my urgency for information comes across anything less than professional.

Thanks again for the work and quick responses.

Sincerely,

Bruce Cormack
