Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

"Movie Player" is a misleading title for the default audio file player. Perhaps it should be named "Media Player". Or maybe the default should have two separate aliases, one for "Movie Player" and one for "Music Player". That way an individual can more easily change the default application for music, without having to deal with the default movie player.

Thank you for your bug. That's an upstream decision. The music player is rhythmbox. If you disagree with that you should open a bug on bugzilla.gnome.org we are not going to change it in a distribution specific way

Sebastien-
Thank you for taking on this bug. I don't think you are correct that the default music play is rhythmbox. I have verified this on multiple fresh Ubuntu Feisty installs. Launching a MP3, OGG, or WAV file brings up Totem by default. Perhaps rhythmbox is the default player on previous versions of Ubuntu or on upgraded installations. Please confirm.

the comment was about the menu item, not what's happening when clicking on a random file from the window manager

To clarify, I was actually referring to the default applications listed when right clicking on a music file in the file manager. Title of the bug is, "Movie Player" default for audio files.

Was totem named "Movie Player" by Ubuntu or by gnome ?

closing since that's not really a bug but something which should be discussed on the mailing lists rather

Yup. I dont see this as a problem, just an amusement. I think its fixed in Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 anyway. Rhythmbox is clearly the default music player and Movie Player opens Totem.

It's a lot clearer now in 8.10 i think. Is it cheeky for me to change this to 'Fixed'? Sorry if it is. Good luck an have fun all, happy hunting :)

Its not really fixed Tom. I still see the same issue in 8.10. Open up a File Browser, navigate to a mp3 file. Right click on the mp3 file,..says "Open with Movie Player." I don't really care if you want to close the bug. Doesn't seem like anyone is going to do anything about it anyways. Probably shouldn't have a 'fixed' status though.
