Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. With which specific version of the openoffice.org package did you notice this issue? You can check using the command 'dpkg -l openoffice.org'. Thanks in advance.

it would have been the latest available for ubuntu feisty with the proposed
update repository enabled at the time of reporting. i won't have access to
that machine again till friday.

There seem to be similar bugs already, with the same "WARNING **: Unknown error forking main binary / abnormal early exit":

Try to install latest drivers available from ATI. That solved it for me. A good step-by-step description how to do so is located at ubuntu.com (direct link: http://tinyurl.com/39kpsy). I had the same problems with my PCI-e X600: Starting eg. OO just showed me the splash screen for half a second and then it just closed /wo any error-msg. Now with my 'selfmade' fglrx drivers everything runs just fine. It's really worth taking some minutes to compile your own *.deb's ;)

Error message when starting 'oowriter' from terminal was 'Unknown error forking main binary', strace revealed a 'SIGFPE (Floating point exception) @ 0 (0) ---'.
