This doesn't appear to be a kernel bug, so it should be assigned to another package. The latest kernel version is: 3.8.0-16.26

Is a kernel with the version 3.8.0.16.31 getting installed with the software updater/apt-get? Or are you only seeing that version in Launchpad?

The kernel version is 3.8.0-16.26. The 3.8.0.16.31 version is the version number of the linux-meta package. These are expected to be in sync up to the ABI number, 3.8.0-16 and 3.8.0.16 respectivly, beyond this the last digit is an unsyncronised upload number for the specific package.

This caused a broken dependencies for me during the update. I had to uninstall all the packages that had been installed; then I installed only the kernel packages and after that, the linux-meta packages of the higher version.
