Also, would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.9 kernel[0]. You will need to install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

I don't know how long it's been happening. Unfortunately bug 1157114 means I rarely take the laptop out of the docking station, so it's mostly on a wired network.

wpasupplicant 2.0 from a PPA pointed out at bug #1099755 might be relevant. That's apparently related to connection drops with specific access points / environments.

Tested wpasupplicant 2.0 from the PPA Timo suggested using the stock raring kernel 3.8.0-17 but unfortunately it made no difference.

Also tried upstream 3.9 as requested and that too makes no difference.

I should point out I have two access points at opposite ends of the house, with the same ESSID. The one nearest my laptop right now is the only one it can see. It's a netgear wndr3700 running dd-wrt. The other one is the same model but running openwrt.

The fact remains a macbook pro sat next to it maintained a solid connection while testing, so I don't think there's anything wrong with the access points. I also never had this happen on 12.04 before upgrading.

I'd like to perform a bisect to figure out what commit caused this regression. It would be very helpful to know the earliest kernel where the issue started happening as well as the latest kernel that did not have this issue.

Can you test the following kernels and report back? We are looking for the first kernel version that exhibits this bug:

v3.6 final: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.6-quantal/
v3.7 final: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.7-raring/
v3.8-rc1: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.8-rc1-raring/

You don't have to test every kernel, just up until the kernel that first has this bug.

One thing to note, you will need to install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

So 3.2.0-23-generic seems okay.

After install finished, I booted back into Ubuntu 13.04 running kernel 3.9.0-030900rc6-generic and it dropped the ssh connection for a whole minute within a minute of me starting the session. Saw this in dmesg just at the point of the drop which may or may not be related.

Thanks for the update, Alan. It sounds like you are seeing this with the Precise kernel as well per comment #15. Do you think you had 11n disabled in the past when you didn't see this in Precise?

Alan Pope 🍺🐧🐱 πŸ¦„ (popey) wrote :

If I boot to a stock precise install (kernel 3.2) I do _not_ get this problem.

I don't recall ever having disabled wireless n.

In fact I just checked my backups of this machine and the oldest one I have is from September 2012, running precise 3.2.0-29-generic. There's no setting in /etc/modprobe.d/*.conf which relates to iwlwifi. I checked my IRC logs and it seems I put this router in back in August 2012, and it hasn't been changed since. So it certainly did work (and still does booted from a USB stick install of precise running 3.2) with no fiddling, today. As soon as I upgrade to 3.5 or above, it breaks wireless N.

Joseph Salisbury (jsalisbury) wrote :

Do you still get this issue if you run a 3.2 kernel on Raring, like mentioned in comment #15? If so, it might be a good test to try the Raring kernel on a Precise install. Do you have the option of putting Precise on this machine to perform this test? I would expect the bug to happen in this case if the bug is kernel related. If it does't, it could suggest an issue in another package, such as network-manager.

Ok. Booted into a precise install and ran 3.2 kernel (default from install) and it's fine. Also installed 3.8.0-18-generic kernel from raring (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/3.8.0-18.28/+build/4486060) , and that seems fine too.

So that implies something other than the kernel has changed which breaks this?

What now? Individually update packages like wpasupplicant, network-manager?

To clarify I am seeing working fine on precise clean install with precise 3.2 kernel and raring 3.8 kernel. I have seen the issue on this same machine with an up to date precise install. So the theory is it regresses during the precise lifecycle. As I have not updated yet, it therefore follows that one of these packages breaks it:-

The fact that the Raring kernel does not exhibit the bug when installed on Precise indicates an issue with a package other than the kernel. I've added the network-manager task. We probably want to have foundations review the bug to get their feedback.

NetworkManager doesn't push packets on wifi. Could you try to see what happens to the routing table when you can't reach things?

ip route

The only thing I can say is that this is is most likely not NetworkManager, which just establishes the connections. It definitely needs more investigation.

I can confirm this bug. It's really quite annoying. For me it started with 3.2 kernel (if i recall correctly) and did not work on any kernel i tried after that.
I've tried with wireless N disabled and it does not disconnect that often, but still makes it a pain to use.
I've updated wifi firmware with last iwlwifi-1000-5.ucode from iwlwifi project.
Also tried to compile most recent iwlwifi drivers with no avail.

Currently i am running:
$ uname -a

Often i am unable to connect to my wireless router for like 10 minutes with this error (connecting with other devices or in windows is without any problem):
Jul 1 23:12:51 vault wpa_supplicant[1551]: Trying to authenticate with 64:70:02:ab:35:fe (SSID='UaE2' freq=2447 MHz)
