Bug Description

We have an issue with Upstart not restarting the autofs job when the automount process dies, and the Upstart job status gets stuck in the "stop/starting" state. The process is not automatically restarted by Upstart like it is supposed to. Trying to manually control the job fails too:

root@www1:~# initctl status autofs
autofs stop/starting
root@www1:~# initctl stop autofs
initctl: Job has already been stopped: autofs
root@www1:~# initctl start autofs
^C <-- hangs
root@www1:~# initctl restart autofs
^C <-- hangs

Starting the automount process manually works just fine, but Upstart still does not recognize that the job is running.

I've tried initctl reload-configuration but that didn't change anything.

Rebooting has fixed the problem in the past, but is not a permanent solution since this is a production web server and we've seen this problem pop up a few times - often months apart from each other. We need to track down the problem and find a fix for it.

I tried posting at http://askubuntu.com/questions/289103/initctl-status-autofs-is-stuck-on-stop-starting before reporting a bug but I received no suggestions.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner.

Upstart is no longer in modern Ubuntu releases in this capacity, so new development for Upstart/it's ecosystem will occur.

If you still have this issue on 16.04/18.04 please find/report a new bug as it's not Upstart related.
