Bug Description

Binary package hint: cupsys

Now and again cups seems to go into a spinloop (massively filling log files) with the error "Too many open files".

Maybe related to cups bug #194368 which has recently been fixed (just a new package needed?)

Please fix this, as printing is really essential for a desktop-distri and this is a real show-stopper.

Ermm... sorry my fault.

I read a Red Hat update note, obviously the bug number relates to a Red Hat bug tracker and noi a cups one.

Just to give an update on the severity - when this occurs the machine grinds to a halt. It happened Friday and SMB clients failed (request timeout) email timed out, postgres slowed to a crawl - the cups service was using 100% and created a 3GB log file logging the error.

CUPS STR #1736 is almost a year old, it has been fixed in CUPS 1.2.2. So that issue should be fixed in Ubuntu Edgy or higher.
Which version of Ubuntu are you using?

i am using Feisty (fully patched) - I assumed as the fix went into the Red Hat release note for March it just took a long time to get around to.

I didn't say it WAS that bug, just did a search and noticed that bug was fixed in RD cups 1.2.8-1.fc5 and noticed that dpkg reports 1.fc5.

If thats not any help please ignore my "attempts" at assistance.

I am running a fully patched feisty also. Dont know wether this is a regression or the patch took so long. Only thing i can say is that the bug occours.

I recompiled cupsys 1.2.11 from gusty yesterday and giving it now a try. Will report again in two week...

I too am having this error creep up on a fully updated Fiesty.

Edgy seems unaffected though.
