Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop

Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) on this hardware: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HP_Pavilion_DV8220EA

Ubuntu tries to open .run self-extracting installers with gEdit.

It should be giving the user some information on what type of file this is and what they might need to do for it to be handled correctly (make it executable).

Confirmed in nautilus, gnome opens a binary program correctly when the mode is 755 (executable) but tries to open ELF binaries in Wine if it's not executable.

Gnome should be able to identify a program which you don't have execution permissions on.

I don't understand Martin's comment enough to know what type of file to test this with. I have no idea what the original file was, sorry.
