Ubuntu hangs/crashes when switching between 2 xsessions

Bug Description

First of all this was not an issue in Dapper, however I never used multiple XSessions in Edgy so I don't know if it is a problem that was introduced with Edgy or Feisty.

When I launch a new XSession using `sudo xinit -- :1 -config myconfig` the new XSession starts fine and runs fine on vt8. But if I try and switch back to vt7 (using ctrl+alt+F7) my entire system hangs and remains that way until I do a hard reboot. This error is 100% unrecoverable and 100% reproduceable on 2 systems I own.

Another problem is the requirement to use root in order to even launch the new XSession. I already added the relevant mcookie to xauth for :1 so why will it not allow me to run startx or xinit without sudo? I don't want to run my session as root (for obvious reasons), so please someone explain how to start a second XSession in Ubuntu without being required to use sudo and without it crashing your entire system.

using Feisty here Toby but as I said in the bug report I never tried to do it in Edgy so not sure when it first appeared, but it certainly wasn't present in Dapper.

I've nominated the bug for xorg in Feisty only, then.

Hi Paladine, thanks for reporting this issue, however I'm having some trouble reproducing it.
Please attach your myconfig and Xorg.1.log files, and the output from lspci.

Hi Bryce,

Sorry I can't provide those logs as I installed gutsy today so they no
longer exists. I haven't tried starting a new xsession yet in gutsy, I
will give it a go tomorrow after I have had some sleep and post the
results and requested info.

That's great, we'll have more luck getting it fixed in gutsy. Let me know once you've had some time to experiment with it.

Heya Bryce,

Sorry I haven't got back to you on this issue yet, I have had a lot of stuff to deal with recently. I will try and do some testing over the weekend in gutsy once I have got around to installing the 289 updates waiting in the wings.

Hi Paladine,

If you've had a chance to investigate this more, we'd much appreciate the logs. Otherwise, we won't be able to investigate this bug further.

Hi guys,

I have the same problem on my laptop with ATI X200M, with FireGL dirvers installed..
The problem still persists in Gutsy, as im struggling to get two XServer sessions running (im using Ion3 window manager, and I need other user to use plain Gnome ; ) )

I had taken look at the logs from XOrg and definietly the hung is caused in FireGL drivers. (you can find the log attached)

If you got ideas how to get rid of whole FireGL thing, and still have acceleration on this type of graphics card, would be appreciated (im doing GL stuff, freshly move out DX from windows:) )
Thanks,
Wojciech
