Loading snd_hda_indel with model=ref makes it work again.

08:47 < crimsun> Treenaks: easy, already fixed. Missing SSID quirk entry. Will push to upstream now.
08:47 < crimsun> Treenaks: you need model=ref

It seems that I need this PCI-quirk on my laptop as well, my sound also disappeared in gutsy, the PCI-id is 0x01d7

This has been "fix committed" for a while now, but new kernels don't contain the fix?

I've tried this with the newest gutsy kernel and modules, but I still have to unload snd-hda-intel, and reload it with model=5stack on my Dell XPS 400 machine..

Still present in latest Gutsy kernel 2.6.22-12. I can't do anything to get snd_hda_intel to load.

Not sure if you have the same problem as my, but I get this message when trying to insmod "snd-hda-intel.ko":

[35537.632000] snd_hda_intel: disagrees about version of symbol struct_module

Maybe a problem between the kernel in "2.6.22-12-386", and the modules in "2.6.22-12-generic".

So until this is fixed in an update, how can I fix it myself?

I got my sound card to work by installing the latest release candidate of Alsa. I followed the instructions at http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Module-hda-intel but downloaded 1.0.15rc versions from http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Download instead of 1.0.14 versions and it worked (although I had errors installing alsa-utils which I duly ignored, so they're probably not working, but I don't need them anyway for now). Once 1.0.15 comes out as a "stable" version and is put into Ubuntu this bug will be solved, but I really think something needs doing about it before then.

snd-hda-intel works on my macbook pro ( ich7 ).

however, if i install linux-backports-modules it borks rather badly on module load. Actually, snd-hda-intel loads, but complains about not being able to detect the pci device.

backports needs fixin'.

There is now a stable release of Alsa 1.0.15. See http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Download

How long will it take for this new version of Alsa to be part of Ubuntu? Will it ever be an update in the Gutsy repos, or do we have to wait until Hardy?

The linux-backports-modules package contains Alsa version 1.0.15 so should resolve your issue.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

This bug isn't present in Hardy (presumably since it uses a newer version of Alsa than Gutsy). So this bug should probably be closed, or at least marked as affecting only Gutsy.
