Bug Description

Binary package hint: mplayer

If I attempt to use mplayer to watch something, it behaves as if I'm sporadically pressing the left arrow key. I can only watch a few seconds before it rewinds, sometimes it just loops right at the beginning: 'tic tic tic tic tic...'.

I filed this under 'mplayer' figuring it would get more attention than under 'blobwars', but blobwars seems to be similarly broken. Attempting to configure the keyboard settings in blobwars is almost impossible; it's as if they keyboard is constantly providing input to the application, and the setting keeps counting down. Where I would want to select "Right" (for the right movement key, for example) the setting changes, as I watch, from "Right" to "Down" to Up, Equals, etc. 9, 8, 7, 6...etc. If I attempt to configure one of the horizontal slider settings for brightness, volume, etc., the slider ticks to the left as I watch (without typing anything).

I have never noticed any strange spurious input behavior on the command line, in vim, in text-entry web forms (such as this one), or OpenOffice, etc. So far, just mplayer and blobwars. I would guess they're using a special interface to notice keyboard input, and that interface is broken. There are probably other applications with this problem but I haven't noticed them yet; I don't play many games or spend very much time watching videos.

Overall, though, *very* nice job on the MacBook in Feisty.

Oh - I forgot that when I actually attempt to *play* blobwars, the blob constantly tries to go left (his eyes are moving, which is the visual indication that he's walking at the edge of the screen), so I can't do anything at all.

This system was installed with a Feisty desktop LiveCD. (I previously ran Edgy but decided against an upgrade.)

I'm attaching a full dpkg -l listing FWIW.

Using a Macbook Pro C2Duo I notice similar behavior in blobwars. Sometimes (though not always) the blob just constantly moves right. I can fix this by pressing the left arrow once.

Same on my macbook C2D x86_64. But here follows an explanation.

Try unloading "applesmc" module. Mplayer is getting
input from the macbook accelerometer that act as joystick. When you
touch the keyboard or just the laptop case there is a little motion detected
by the accelerometer. Then a joystick event is generated and
processed by mplayer causing the mess.

Try it when applesmc is loaded and mplayer running: tap the
laptop case in different places to see different joystick movements :)

In any case I believe this is a bug: applesmc is way too useful to
unload it just for mplayer. Mplayer should be more "smooth" to
joystick events.

I guess other packages are affected by this issue.
