As an alternative, here is a more robust branch that uses abs_top_srcdir to pull in the dependent header files and libraries, as well as enabling "make check" on a just-configured source tree actually work instead of failing because the required libraries have not yet been built. In addition, some of the cargo-cultish $(TMP) calls are removed.
