single user mode: doesn't proceed to RL 2 on exit

Bug Description

Binary package hint: upstart-compat-sysv

Selecting single-user mode from the grub menu gives a root login.

However, when exiting, this root login doesn't proceed to the appropriate runlevel, but merely gives an indication that the shell has exited.

It is necessary to press ctrl-alt-del to reboot from there; machines with ctrl-alt-del disabled will need a hard reset.

It may have been related to the fact that I ran a daemon (gpsd) while at the root shell.

I don't remember which Ubuntu version (I think it was Gutsy) but trying it out now with current Gutsy does not have this problem.

I'll re-open if I experience the bug again.
