Bug Description

Binary package hint: adept

In adept there is no option to manage the ubuntu backports repositories. They don't appear in the 3rd-party sources and backports are not one of the ubuntu/canonical options. In fact I was completely unaware that I still had backports enabled until today when my music-playing applications started seriously malfunctioning. It seems that during distribution upgrades the backports entries in /etc/apt/source.list are automatically upgraded. What was a useful repository while I was using dapper has caused some serious problems under feisty. A package manager needs to let you enable/disable any repository.

An identical problem to this also occurs in synaptic. I don't know if it is the same issue or not.

Do you know if this was the sources editor inside of adept, or if it was the program that pops up to let you edit the sources from inside adept? There are two ways it is done, and knowing which way you're doing this will make a big difference in how we go about troubleshooting and fixing this bug.

Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean there because I can only find one way of managing repositories: the Adept --> Manage Repositories menu.

That said, I have now discovered that there is a way of toggling the backport repositories after all. The problem is that it is not where I would have expected it to be. I would have expected to find it under the (K)ubuntu Sources tab, because that is where the other Ubuntu and Canonical repositories are managed. In fact it's controlled from the "Unsupported updates" check box in the Updates tab.

In other words the problem is really that the placing of this particular option in the gui is (IMO) counterintuitive.

I agree that the way to manage backport repositories should be better documented. However, they could be managed through unsupported updates as you said. I update the description of this report suitable as wishlist. Thanks.

You can manage backports in Hardy, with the window that pops up when you select "Manage repositories" from the menu.
