Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-live

When booting the live-cd, the user should be informed that because the boot is performed from a cd, it's dramatically slower than a "normal", hard drive boot. This could be done with a notice with something along the lines of "Starting Ubuntu from a CD takes a while. Please be patient for a few minutes."

My background for suggesting this is the many times I have been asked the question "Does it really take this long to start Ubuntu?" when showing the live-cd to someone. Also, this might help give the new user an idea of what's really going on at the moment. Maybe the boot sequence on the live cd could even be used to inform about what Ubuntu is and what the live-cd does to the computer?

I agree with this idea. The boot time on the live-cd does take a long time, and it would be a great time to inform the user of some basics. The live-cd is often the first time that people get to see Ubuntu, which is another good reason to inform them of the basics.

Here is an idea of what could be included:

First, an explanation of what a Live-CD is (temporary, running in memory, no hard drive changes, slower than normal installation).

Second, some basics about what Ubuntu is (free software) and what it can do (internet, office application, games, collaboration, email, thousands of applications to choose from).

Interesting idea ... not sure how pretty it would be, but we could certainly do something basic with TEXT-URGENT commands to usplash. They wouldn't be internationalised at the moment though.

Well, TEXT-URGENT messages could be an acceptable temporary solution, but still a temporary one. Following up on Tristan's ideas, I'm imagining some well laid out full screen slides replacing the usual usplash screen with information about the live-cd and Ubuntu.

I support this: the sad truth is that many beginners don't know that loading from a CD is much slower than loading from the hard drive.

The Windowze installed has information on Windows, why wont Ubuntu have the same? I guess it would be nice and important...

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu install, that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be addressed as part of this project.

- This is not a problem with the install , but rather LiveCD. papercuts are for bugs in the installed OS.
For further information about papercuts criteria, please read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut.

Don't worry though, this bug has been marked as "Invalid" only in the papercuts project.

I am marking this as a duplicate of bug 287599 which also deals with running applications on the Live CD being slower.
