commenting out :
  { TERMINAL_ENCODING_SHIFT_JIS, FALSE, "SHIFT-JIS", N_("Japanese") },

from encoding.c and the equivalent enum in encoding.h (and then building) produces a working gnome-terminal.

Sorry, I can't offer any more, that's about all the time I have for debugging this.

Actually, it looks like it was fixed with prior updates.
