I confirm this behaviour. Moreover, besides the application names, it also concerns the quicklists.

There are also excessive decorations/shadow around the edges of windows and menus (both global and local menus) compared to previous releases of Unity in earlier Ubuntu releases. Should I open a new bug for this?

Amr Ibrahim, do you think it's really a bug, not an intentional change of the theme? Recently, a new window decorator has been implemented and app windows become borderless. It looks like the shadows around app windows may be wider due to these changes... As for me, I cannot see any ugly window decorations right now. They look fairly nice and smooth to me.
Only tooltip/quicklist shadows have sharp edges.

I think it's a bug yeah. See the picture I attached. The window has too much shadow compared to earlier releases of Unity/Ubuntu. I'm comparing with Ubuntu 12.04 and 13.10.

This also applies to all menus and tooltips.

Amr Ibrahim: that's not a bug, it's a preference. It's configurable, and is set to be bigger than in previous versions.

excuse me but when it comes by default and looks like this, its a bug and shouldnt be released like that.
either make a different shadow size for unity tooltips or something... it looks f* up xD

Jaime, Amr is talking about the big shadows on windows, not on the Unity tooltips. The tooltips' shadows being clipped is considered a bug, while the windows having a larger shadow is just a change in 14.04.
