Bug Description

Binary package hint: cupsys-driver-gutenprint

Info here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3166817#post3166817

Basically, Gutenprint doesn't work as of the latest big update.

We can apparently set our printers up but jobs just clog up the queue and are unable to print.

Gutenprint should work for my printer automatically as it has before (Canon BJC-250) as it says the gutenprint driver is compatible with it

http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_driver.cgi?driver=gutenprint&fromprinter=Canon-BJC-250

but since I'm filing the bug report it obviously does not work.

There are no Canon drivers available! This is odd since my printer was automatically identified by the setup program.

Also, this new update installed 2 'Printing' icons in System>Administration and a 'Default Printer' entry in System>Preferences. How about renaming the 'Printing' entries to something more descriptive and then merging all 3 icons in the same section (or perhaps getting rid of 2 of them).

Printing of test page continuously ejects blank pages.
Oher printing just hangs in queue.

Similar deal with HP laserjet 1020, jobs just sit there, no printing at all.

Even the PPD files that should work with Canon BJC-250 printers are useless :(

Maybe Ubuntu devs should test the newest version of Gutenprint (5.1.3)

This is most probably due to the new AppArmor protection of CUPS,

Do

sudo aa-complain cupsd

and try to print again.

O.K. here.
Had to run 'cups-genppdupdate.5.0' also.

Thanks!

It is not 'sort of' working.

Canon BJC-250
High Quality Gutenprint Driver (simple)

My test page begins to print but then STOPS after only a few linse of printing. The 'Status' of the printer under 'Properties reads "Printing: Gutenprint Printing page 1, 53%" and it doesn't sem interested in going much further.

I also notice that:

1) The 'Properties' of the printer take forever to load.
2) There are 2 printer icons in the systray
3) There are 2 icons named 'Printing' under System>Administration.

In addition to my above post:

4) Printing jobs take much longer than usual to reach the printer (and don't print when they get there)

This should have been fixed in

cupsys (1.2.12-3ubuntu2) gutsy; urgency=low

  * cupsys.logrotate: Fix last occurence of 'cupsys' user.
  * Moved all Debian specific filters to debian/local/filters.
  * Cleaned up debian/rules, moved some file installs to
    debian/cupsys.install.
  * Merge debian/cupsys.files into debian/cupsys.install and remove the
former. Two different files are just too confusing.
  * debian/local/filters/pdftops: Do not pass /etc/cups/pdftops.conf to
pdftops if it does not exist (poppler-utils does not have this file).
    (LP: #125300)
  * debian/local/apparmor-profile: Unbreak library access (for e. g.
ghostscript and gutenprint) and allow execution of pdftops and pstops.
  * debian/local/apparmor-profile: Update profile to work with cups-pdf.
