A fix has not been released upstream, it is only a proposed patch at this stage.

To get the fix included in Ubuntu, it would help if you tried transforming it into a debdiff (http://wiki.ubuntu.com/PackagingGuide/Recipes/Debdiff) and submit it for review (http://wiki.ubuntu.com/SponsorshipProcess). If you prefer somebody else to do that, that's fine - please just indicate if you're available to do that.

Patch looks good. Do you think you can put it into debian/patches instead of patching the source code itself?

Hmm. Apparently in 0.2.2-4 this patch is already included. debian/patches/window-record.diff and has to be backported for Hardy.

As far as I can see it's not included. Can you let me know which patch includes the fix? If you can't find it, can you change the debdiff and add the fix as a patch in debian/patches?

It was in the 0.2.2-4 package:

istanbul (0.2.2-4) unstable; urgency=low

  * Do not screw up python import path at runtime with wrong data
    (Closes: #476674)
  * Fix window selection and recording under compiz, patch by
Krzysztof Kotlenga (Closes: #415896) <------ This is the patch i'm talking about.

This comes with a diff called debian/patches/window-record.diff and fixes the issue.

Oh ok.. I missed that. Sorry.

If you want to fix it in Hardy, you need to follow this process: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

Unsubscribing ubuntu-universe-sponsors for now.

For some unlucky user this bug can fill the criteria of "Bugs which may, under realistic circumstances, directly cause a loss of user data". They don't test with recording an area first, they record something non-repeatable (e.g. a usability test) and wham, data is lost.

Oh, just noticed. I get this problem without compiz, myself.

The fix is included with istanbul 0.2.2-4 which is included in Intrepid. I have not experienced the issue since. Marking Fix Released.
