VMware Workstation worked fine. After Ubuntu updates are completed it no longer launches normally.

Standard support for Ubuntu 12.04 has ended, so this bug is being expired.

(Generally this class of issue is caused by discrepancy between the updated kernel and the vmware build, and rebuilding or reinstalling vmware should resolve it.)
